how to decorate heart cookies

Puffy Stitched Heart Decorated Cookies

I've had a photo saved from several years back of little fabric hearts that have been stuffed to make them "puffy" and then stitched around the edges. I've attempted numerous times to emulate them, but this time, I think I finally nailed it.

I've done my best to incorporate thickened glaze into my list of favored mediums. It really does hit the spot for certain designs that just don't work any other way. If you add lots of powdered sugar to glaze icing, it eventually becomes something you can mold in your hands. It's still sticky, but doable.

I'm so glad it worked for these puffy hearts. The moldability provided a way to make the stitch holes right after putting the glaze on the cookie. It gave exactly the effect I was going for! 👍

Golden Valentines Decorated Cookie Collection

It's funny.....every year I want to do both "formal" and "casual" Valentines cookies. Here's what I came up with for the fancy side of the holiday. haha

Gold always transforms a set of cookies. In fact, when my husband took some of these cookies to work (his co-workers are often the recipients of my projects), many said these were over-the-top of any I'd ever done. I don't know about that.....but I do know that when you add gold to a set, it definitely takes them to a more elegant status.

Starting the season with some golden love..... ❤️

Embossed Cookie Dough Valentines Decorated Cookies

As this Valentines season drew close, I really wanted to incorporate texture into the cookie dough before baking... to take advantage of that beautiful 3D look. Once you've rolled it into the dough and baked it, all you have to do is dust it to emphasize the impressions.

The most important part of this process is rolling the texture into the dough before baking. Here's a video (of a different project) showing how to place the texture mat face down on the dough and use the pressure of the rolling pin to make the impressions into the dough before baking it. The relevant part is at the very beginning of the video.

Once the cookies are baked and cooled, brush food coloring or dust over the surface to bring out all the details. For these Valentine cookies, I used Americolor Bright White gel for some and gold dust mixed with vodka for others.

After completing the dusting of the textures, embellish the cookies with layered patterns, mini cookies, or cut-out edible clay pieces.

The background texture really makes these cookies "pop".

This set shows the same mold or texture shown on two different cookies. One cookie has impressed dough before baking, and one uses a edible clay mold added on top of a plain cookie. YouTube video HERE
