Candied Apple Decorated Cookies (Tutorial)

Candied apples......I can still remember as a child when they would appear in the grocery store and the excitement that built knowing that autumn was just around the corner.

Nowadays candied apples have taken on a whole new dessert category with all the gourmet flavors you can imagine. It sure was fun to "spice up" these candied apple cookies and add all kind of yummy treats to them.

To make these cookies, it is important to remove any stem on these apple cookies since you're going to put a stick in place of the stem. As seen below, trim the stems off the cookies before baking and carefully push a food grade stick into the top of each apple cookie.

Once the cookies are baked and cooled, make a mixture of red dust (and/or green dust, if desired) and vodka (or clear extract, i.e. almond) to paint on the tops of the apples as shown below.

For caramel apple cookies, outline and flood most of the apple shape with golden brown glaze as shown below. While the glaze is still wet, cover the top with desired topping and shake off the excess. Possible toppings include chocolate chips, chopped nuts, sprinkles, and coconut.

For shiny red candied apples, outline and flood the apple with red glaze as shown below.

After the glaze has dried for several hours (or overnight), paint over the red glaze with a mixture of red "poppy" dust and corn syrup.

Personal Side

Things have settled down here and this week improved over last.

I was able to do cookies this last weekend, and that is always a good thing. :)

Big news....CookieCrazie is getting a complete makeover.

The site is coming together.....and hopefully very soon, you will see a whole new look.

I love that it is very visual......full of cookie photos.

That has been my desire for many months now.....to have a site where those who just wanted to look at the different cookie designs could come and take a peek without having to see lots of tutorials.

It will finally be a reality.

The blog will still be featured on the site, but there will be tons of photos all in the photo gallery

to just go look at all the different cookie collections.

I can't wait for you, my faithful readers, to see it!

Thank you for supporting my cause and making CookieCrazie what it is.

I'm blessed beyond measure!

2016 Apple Pickin' Decorated Cookie Collection

We're heading into a wonderful time of the year......autumn.

And what better way to kick it off than with apple cookies. :)

Happy Harvest time to all of you!

Apple Pie Decorated Cookie (Tutorial)

Pie Cookies are another one of my favorite shapes to create.

This time we're pretending they are filled with apples. haha

Since sugar cookie dough is similar to pie crust dough,

it makes sense to use it to emulate a realistic pie crust.

For these cookies, I hand cut the super wide pie, and then used a

hamburger cutter, and a squished cupcake cutter to make the other two.

Roll out a long piece of dough and place it over the crust rim of the pie.

(see photos)

Use various tools to make crust indentations at the top of the crust and around the rim.

Once the cookies are baked and cooled, outline and flood the bottom of the cookies

to create a pie pan (in your choice of colors).

(see photo below)

Allow the cookies to dry for approximately one hour, and then use a cake tester to make

horizontal indentations similar to found in pie stoneware.

 (see photo below)

Allow the cookies to dry overnight.

Using a paint brush, shade the crusts with first sunflower and then caramel dusts (in dry form).

Apple Branch Decorated Cookies (Tutorial)

Since it is apple pickin' time, apple branch cookies seemed appropriate.

I used Creative Cookier's Nest-on-a-Branch cutter to create these cookies.

When the nest is turned upside-down, there is room to pipe some apples growing off the branch. :)

To give the apples a 3D look, I added balls of cookie dough to represent the apples.

(see photo below)

After the cookies have baked and cooled, outline and flood red glaze onto the round shapes.

 (see photo below)

Next, add brown glaze to form the large branch with twigs.

After 15 minutes of dry time, add some additional branch lines.

After an hour of dry time, use a toothpick or boo-boo stick to imprint branch lines.

Add leaves and stems to the apples.

Allow the cookies to dry overnight.

If desired, paint on darker and lighter brown food color shades to make the branches look more realistic.
