Scrapbook Cookie Tags with Vellum (Tutorial)

Back when I was creating my Christmas cookies,
I discovered it is possible to achieve a vellum-effect with glaze.

Vellum is a fine parchment-paper that is transparent and allows a great layering effect for
craftsy-things like tags and scrapbooking.

Since plain glaze without coloring added is fairly transparent
(usually considered an undesirable trait),
I got the idea to make some glaze super thin and
either pipe it lightly within an outlined area or paint it on.
Both techniques work, but I find piping works best.

To get the cool layered-effect of a tag, start with embossing the cookie dough.
For these particular winter tags, I wanted the base to look like burlap.

Roll out the dough and then press the burlap mat directly onto the cookie dough.
Cut out the shape desired, and if you're making a tag, use the end of straw to make a hole.

Once the cookies are baked and cooled,
brush both caramel dust and deep brown dust onto the surface to make the burlap texture POP.

For colored dough, brush on a lighter color like ivory dust.

Now you can let your imagination run wild.
Outline and flood any portion of the tag you'd like.
Include a wet-on-wet pattern if desired.

Allow the base to dry for at least one hour.
Make glaze with no food coloring added to it (not even the small amount of white within the recipe).

Thin it to a runny pour-able consistency......
(see photo below)

Outline the area where you'd like to have the vellum.

Carefully add the very thin glaze, either by piping it or painting it on.

Once you let it dry overnight, you can use foodcolor markers to add a message,
or you can pipe on decor or text with glaze.

Oh the possibilities! :)
