Ocean Refuge Decorated Cookie Collection

Refuge…. oh how we need a refuge….a place of shelter, protection, and safety.

I planned this cookie set out of my own need for the refuge of God. But when I decorated this set, our world was in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. God’s timing is perfect. This was/is an apropos message for all of us….at all times.

I love how cookies can be a way of expression….and also a way to send an important, encouraging message.

Summer Beach Wave Cookie (Tutorial)

This cookie tutorial was filed away back in January after these cookies
were made for the 2015 Cookie Cruise.

And now that it is summer.....it's time to share it. :)

The design can be put on any shape.....but for traveling purposes,
I chose a basic rectangle cookie that would be less likely to break.

Outline and flood one end of the cookie with a light tan glaze,
including a ripple effect for the water wave.

Outline and flood the other end of the cookie with blue glaze.

Allow the glaze to dry for about 4 hours before attempting to "write something in the sand".
You can use the letter press set (as I did on these cookies) or a scribe to carve out letters.

Press the letters into the tan glaze as shown below.

To make sure the white nonpareils stick only to the edge of the wave,
allow the cookies to dry overnight before adding the white outline on the edge of the wave.
Sprinkle white nonpareils over the wet white outline to catch a few for a "bubbly" look.

Paint Americolor Bright White gel over the edge of the waves to make them look foamy.

To give the sand some texture, make a mixture of light brown sugar, white & ivory gels,
and paint it over the surface of the dried tan glaze.

Finally, mix together some Sky Blue gel with Bright White gel
to add some dimension to the water on the cookie.

Summer is HERE...... in Cookies :)

This holiday weekend has always signaled the beginning of.......

So I decided to pull together a whole series of cookies to celebrate. :)

Expect to see a blog post on each design featured in S-U-M-M-E-R.

Oh.....it's going to be a FABULOUS summer. :)

Nadya's Sea Treasures Cookie Collection

A favorite project of late....... making some very special cookies for a very special lady.

Nadya is a dear friend from Ukraine.

Slavik & Nadya and their three children.....Aliya (back), Slavik (front middle), & Bogdan (right)                                                  They were our hosts for the 2012 UA mission trip.
Donna, Pam, Martha, & Nadya
Olena & Nadya (very good friends)

Nadya came to the States 5 years ago......
partnering with her husband.....
bringing their three young children,
they chose to completely uproot their family and disrupt everything "normal"
to allow Slavik to obtain his post graduate eductation.

Nadya knew no English.
She was a foreigner in our land.
But courageously......with God's grace and strength,
she diligently learned English.
She supported her husband wholeheartedly
and they successfully completed their "detour" journey this summer.

Now they are back in their "home country"......
but almost foreigners in their own land.
Becoming acclimated to Ukrainian life is quite the adjustment after living in the USA for 5 years.

Knowing they would arrive back in Ukraine just a few days before we came for our trip,
and knowing how hard this transition was for Nadya.....
I wanted to make her a very special collection of cookies.
I knew that she loved my ocean cookies from last year.

Nadya is super precious to me.
She is my interpreter most of the time I am in Ukraine.
She's done everything she can to support our efforts in Boryslav.
She's taught me how to sing several songs in Ukrainian.
She is a huge encouragement in my life.
And most important.....she is a very very special friend.
I'm blessed to have her in my life. :)

The small shell cookies were given to each elderly Ukrainian when we visited their homes.

Ocean Shell Cookies (Tutorial)

To make simple shell cookies you'll need:

Cut out a scalloped heart and then trim it
into small shell shaped cookies.

Outline and flood the shells with ivory glaze.

After they have dried for 30 min to 1 hr, add some
fanned vertical indentations using a cake tester.

Allow the cookies to dry overnight.
Mix some gel color with almond extract.
Brush onto shells in a layered look.

Allow them to dry for at least an hour (or the color will run),
and then airbrush on some pearl sheen airbrush color.
Since my airbrush broke, I just painted it on.
