As I thought through all the possibilities of shapes to do for Christmas…..it seemed like “decorating Christmas cookies” was a perfect theme.

That’s how I started decorating cookies. My dad made it an event every year when I was a little girl. My whole family did it together. And boy did we have fun…and make lots of memories!

Even though the Christmas season is jammed packed with so many extra activities…..make some time to decorate cookies with the ones you love. It will be worth every second.

Homespun Christmas Tree Decorated Cookies (Tutorial)

This is one of my favorite Christmas cutters.
Several years ago, I designed this shape with some good cookie friends and the cutters were made in mass quantity. But eventually, they sold out of the cutter and it was hard to place another order. Thankfully, my good friends at Creative Cookier agreed to offer this shape in their shop. You can find the "Homespun Christmas Tree" cutter HERE. 

Refer to the video and photos below to learn how the two homespun tree designs were made.

Before baking the cookie dough, place an impression mat face down on the dough and impress the dough by adding pressure from a rolling pin. Cut out the shape using the embossed dough. The two mats used for these designs: 1) Burlap and 2) Wood planks

After the cookies have been baked and cooled, brush the embossed dough with dry caramel dust.

For the first design, cover the tree portion of the cookie with green glaze using random zig zag lines. (see photo and video for more visual details)

After the initial layer of glaze has dried for at least 15 minutes, add an additional layer of zig zag lines.

Completely fill a silicone button mold with red edible clay. (Recipe for clay found HERE & Mold used found HERE.) Place the filled mold in the freezer for at least one hour.

Once the clay has been frozen for more than an hour, you should be able to pop the buttons out of the mold and place directly on the cookie. If preferred, you can mold the buttons, pop them out, dry them on parchment paper overnight, and then "glue" them onto the tree using left over glaze. (see photos and video for more visual details)

For the second design, emboss the dough with the wood plank impression mat. Bake and cool the cookies. Brush dry caramel dust over the embossed dough.

Outline and flood each "plank" with a different color glaze and a different wet-on-wet pattern to give a patchwork appearance. (see photos and video for more visual details)

And there you have it......two fun homespun Christmas tree cookie designs.

Four Christmas Trees Decorated Cookies (Tutorial)

Christmas trees are one of the standard shapes for the season's arsenal.
There are so many ways to decorate them.
Here's a few simple designs for basic evergreen cookies.

The first one makes use of sprinkles (sprinkles found HERE) and edible clay (recipe found HERE) to decorate up a tree super fast and yet, super festive at the same time. Check out the photos and video for visual details. 

Outline and flood the tree with green glaze. While still wet, cover glaze with sprinkles and shake off excess.

Completely fill a silicone button mold with red edible clay. (Mold shown found HERE.) Place the filled mold in the freezer for 1 hour or more. 

Color the trunk with a brown food color marker (Americolor marker found in a set HERE.)

After at least one hour of the clay freezing in the button silicone mold, you should be able to pop it out and place it directly on the top of the tree.

For the other tree designs, start by coloring the trunk with a brown food color marker (Americolor brown marker found in THIS SET).

Outline and flood the tree with white glaze.

Here's where the variance comes in. Using green glaze, you can make various patterns on the tree using the wet-on-wet technique. For this particular design, go back and forth with a sweeping swag motion. (see video for more visual detail).

For this design, make horizontal scallops with green glaze all the way down the tree.

And for the final design, make random zig zag motions as you move down the entire tree. (see video for more visual detail)

For each of these three final designs, allow the initial flood to dry for at least 30 minutes, and then go back and add a layer of the same pattern on top of the wet on wet surface to give it a 3D look.

Christmas + Quilts = Bliss
As you can see.....I love both with a passion.
Combining a Christmas theme with a quilt theme must be the ultimate, right?

A few years ago, Ginny of Creative Cookier made this fun tree cutter for me that allows you to make a tessellation. I can't seem to get enough of it. Every year, I look at that cutter and want to make a new set. It's fun to see the different patterns over the years...... side by side.

This year's quilt included burlap molded cookie dough for every other tree. That rustic look gets me every time.
